Interfaith Marriages

In India, traditionally interfaith marriages are not encouraged. Couples with interfaith marriage are more likely to be unhappy and end in divorce or unsuccessful marriage.

Marriage is not just a union of two people, but families. Usually in the youth people feel themselves more secular and ready to go for an interfaith marriage, but as the time proceed with kids and older age, people get to engage themselves in spiritual or religious activities and differences start to show up, which leads to confusion to kids at times, and unhappiness between parents.

For a successful marriage, both wife and husband need to adjust and compromise on various fronts. And if the faith is not common, that makes it even more difficult.

To give some instances:

  • If husband wants to make a trip to a sacred place, and his wife belongs to the same faith - they can go together to make it a successful trip. And if it is interfaith marriage, they would need to find a company outside home to their trip.
  • For every day visit to place of worship it  will be seamless to go to the single place, and have a common social life.
  • They will have same terminology to talk when they have to talk things beyond the material life.
  • Their parents and parents in law will more likely be in sync if it is a same-faith marriage.
